Cerebral Malaria

Malaria is one of the frequently found health problem at tropical country. It is one of the frequently found causes of fever.

It is caused by protozoa. It’s affecting people, all over the world. It is so read by infected Anopheles mosquito. It is responsible for disease condition and death of people. Diagnosis at initial hour is very important. Early diagnosis should always be accompanied with earlier treatment. Treatment at earlier stages helps in effective cure and prevention of disease condition.

Plasmodium genus is of four types

  • Plasmodium falciparum
  • Plasmodium vivax  
  • Plasmodium ovale
  • Plasmodium malarial

Any kind of delaying in treatment can lead to harmful consequences. It can even cause death.   It is frequently found in patient staying at endemic area, coming up with fever. Cerebral malaria comes under the severe manifestation of falciparum malaria.

It is characterized by:

  • Coma is the cardinal symptom coma persisting for male than 30minitutes.
  • It may represented by abnormal behavior.
  • delirium
  • It is accompanied with high fever and chills.
  • difficulty in bending head
  • pace of the complaint is sudden in nature.
  • It can lead to death, if not treated on early basis. It has high risk with it.
  • eye complications are seen for example, dilatation of pupil, retinal hemorrhage.
  • children has got worst prognosis.
  • convulsions are found which are generalized. Convulsion is commonest among children. Convulsion is found repeatedly.

After effects of cerebral malaria:

  • Learning inabilities
  • Language problem
  • Further attack of epilepsy
  • Deafness
  • Reduced learning and understanding abilities
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Blindness
  • Paralysis

Following features show poor prognosis:

  • Frequent convulsion
  • Coma more than 30 minutes
  • Extreme weakness.
